Fire Prevention Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau maintains an ongoing effort to keep Yuba City a safe place to live, work and play. The Bureau has responsibility for fire code enforcement, public safety education, fireworks, burn permits, fire origin and cause determination, and weed and hazard abatement. Fire code enforcement is a top priority of the Bureau. The Fire Prevention Manager administers the business inspection program while the Fire Safety Inspector and engine company personnel perform the inspections. For new commercial construction, the Fire Prevention Manager performs the plan reviews and the Fire Safety Inspector performs the inspections. The main focus of these inspections is “enforcement through education”. This commitment to pro-active fire prevention activities continues to result in reducing or eliminating fire losses.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is an active participant in providing quality fire and life safety education to the community. The Fire Safety House is used at many community events, including the Children’s Health and Safety Fair, the Downtown Plumas Street Business District’s Summer and Winter Strolls, and the Tomato Festival. The safety house is always a big hit and delivers hands-on fire safety education. This interactive program allows children and adults to walk through a simulated residence and learn what to do in the event of fire or other emergency. Additionally, the department’s own “Code 3 Clowns” visit many schools in the community blending music, singing, humor, songwriting and zaniness to bring life lessons in safety do’s and don’ts to local kindergarten and elementary school children. With these and other outreach programs, the Bureau delivers safety education to several thousand Yuba City residents and guests annually.
